OBITUARY

Deacon Harold Billingslea Scott, Jr. quietly transitioned to his heavenly home on Sunday, November 19, 2017.  A Victory Celebration of Deacon Scott’s life will be held on Saturday, December 2, at 12:00 Noon at Greater Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 1207 N. Jefferson Street, Tampa 33602, Rev. Dr. Brett Snowden, Pastor, Officiating.  Eulogist will be Rev. Dr. Shafter E. Scott (brother to Harold) of St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church, Plant City. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery.   

Deacon Scott was the 3rd of 13 children, born in West Tampa to Deacon Harold B. Scott, Sr. (deceased) and Deaconess Lucile Scott. He attended Dunbar and Harlem Elementary, Booker T. Washington, graduating with the Howard W. Blake High School Class of 1959. He was an active support - Class of '59 and H.W. Blake Athletic Booster Club. 

He received his Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering  from Gibbs Junior College, St. Petersburg, FL.  Deacon Scott, accepted a position with the University of Tampa as an electrician for 10 years.   In 1972 Harold joined the Model Cities and Urban Renewal Program as a Training Counselor/HUD Inspector; 1975 the program merged with the City of Tampa.  Harold proudly served 34 years with the City of Tampa Dept. of Code Enforcement, retiring January 2009 as a Community Development Supervisor, Code Enforcement.

He received countless awards/accommodations for his tireless and dedicated service.  During this time, Harold was a great supporter to the City of Tampa Black History Committee, Inc., and created the Harold B. Scott, Jr. Academic Scholarship under this organization, awarded to a graduating senior from his Beloved Greater Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.

He loved to sing and used his talent in the Don Thompson/Howard W. Blake Alumni Choir, Adult Choir and Male Chorus of Greater Bethel M B Church.   Deacon Scott served God faithfully at Greater Bethel and briefly with the congregation of Faith Temple M B Church, Tampa. 

He proudly sang on church programs throughout Florida with The Signing Specials, a semi-professional all male group.  He was in the Benevolent Gospel Group composed of family and dear friends signing to the sick and shut in throughout Hillsborough County. Mr. Scott remained a long standing member of the Woodland Terrace Neighborhood Watch Grid 055. 

Deacon Harold Billingslea Scott, Jr.  has joined his Heavenly family:  Father, Deacon Harold B. Scott, Sr.; Maternal Grandparents, Shafter and Annie Bell Willis; Paternal Grandparents, Judge and Mary Billingslea; Sisters, Roberta Scott Wilder, Annie Theresa Scott; Brother, William E. Scott, niece, Gewanda M. Wilder and nephew, Shafter “Van” Scott. 

Those left to cherish memories of Deacon Scott include: his loving mother, Deaconess Lucile B. Scott; his devoted and loving wife, Deaconess Diane Lane Scott; dedicated son, Harold II and wife (Sheila); son Eric J. Scott (Gretchen) and their family of St, Petersburg, FL; loving sisters and brothers, Carol Scott, Harriet L. Scott, Arthur B. Scott (Joanne), Rev. Dr. Shafter E. Scott (Evalina), Jacob W. Scott and Andrew G. Scott, all of Tampa;  2 fun loving adult grandchildren, Arius Scott (and sons) and Haron M. Holmes-Scott; his Lane-in-Law family, father-in-law, Isaac H. Lane (River Rouge, MI);  brother-in-law, Dr. Kenneth Lane (Sagamore Hills, Ohio); brother-in-law, Ronald Lane (Atlanta, GA); sister-in-law, Dr. Deborah Lane Freeman (Dr. Jon Freeman) and sister-in-law, Dr. Modish Lane, all from Beachwood, Ohio; Tampa nephews and nieces, Frederick Deere, Carolyn Scott, Tony Scott, Melvin Wilder, Jr., Carrie Scott, Elizabeth Close (Jimmy), Theresa Scott, Apostle Harold E. Blake Class of ’59; his longtime Flora Street neighbors; close and family friends Mrs. Joyce Stevens, Mr. Vincent Jackson, Ms. Betty Jo Hayes, Mrs. Ruth Jefferson, Deaconess Dorothy Green, family of Mrs. Mary Alice Dorsett and a host of spiritual, civic friends and co-workers. 

A public viewing will be Friday, Dec 1, 2017 at Greater Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 1207 N. Jefferson Street, Tampa 33602 from 5-7 p.m. with family receiving friends from 6-7 p.m.
