Hazel Wilder Hitchman of Tampa passed away Wednesday, July 31,
2019. Homegoing Celebration will be held Saturday, August 10 at 11 a.m.
at Mt. Olive AME Church, 1902 W. LaSalle St., with Reverend Gregory V.
Gay, Sr., Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Garden of
Deaconess Hazel Wilder Hitchman was a native of Quincy, FL, born to
Peter and Anna Wilder. She spent her formative years with her
Grandmother, Molly O’Neal, in Georgia.
Upon her return to Quincy she received her education in the public
schools of Gadsden County. She later married Walter Hitchman and to this
union two daughters were born and a son who later died in infancy.
Deaconess Hitchman received Christ at an early age and joined Mt. Hebron
AME Church in Quincy, FL. Upon coming to Tampa, she joined Mt. Olive AME
Church with membership of over 70 years. In 1992 she became the second
consecrated Deaconess of Mt. Olive AME Church and served in this
capacity until her health declined.
She leaves to cherish her legacy: her devoted daughters, Linda H.
Gilchrist (Jimmie), Doris Louise Hitchman, Lena Hitchman Jackson, and
Dorothy Hitchman; grandchildren, Ramon Raiford, Creshawnia H. Griffin
(Jonathan), Robert Gilchrist, Debbie Gilchrist, Richard Villard and
Beverley Evans; great grandchildren, Michael Griffin, Mekai Griffin,
Michayla Griffin, Jeremy Lucas, Demetrius Simpson, Johnny Wilson,
Johnika Campbell, Brandon Gilchrist, Tanisha Rock, Cliffreya Cadet,
Clifton Haney, Shirley Jackson, Carolyn Robinson, Evelyn Oliver
(Jessie), Craig Milton (Rhonda), Phyllis Wilson (Darnell), Rodney Cooper
(Sandra), Carolyn Banks (Johnny), Marsha Peoples, and Sean Peoples
(Nichole); and a host of other great- great grands and great-great-great
grandchildren; like a sister, her niece, Julia Simmons; and a host of
nieces, nephews and cousins; one cousin, Annie Pearl Bryant; adopted
children, Eddie J. Raiford, Margaret Brookins, LaVerne Latson, Dr.
Paulette Walker and Barbara Rutledge; adopted grandson, Tyrone Gray; the
Chapman and Lucas families; the Mt. Olive Church family and friends.
We especially want to acknowledge the Life Path Hospice Burgundy Team
members for their care and support during this time.
The remains will repose after 5 p.m. Friday, August 9 at Ray Williams
Funeral Home, 301 N. Howard Avenue.
