Emeritus, Reverend Oscar Johnson, Jr., of Tampa, passed away
Tuesday, September 3, 2019. A Homegoing Celebration will be held,
Saturday, September 14 at 11:00 a.m. at Greater Bethel Missionary
Baptist Church, 1207 N. Jefferson Street, Reverend Brett Snowden, Pastor
and Reverend Andre Saunders, officiating. Interment will follow in
Garden of Memories Cemetery.
Reverend Oscar Johnson, Jr. was a native and lifelong resident of Tampa,
Florida. He was educated in the public schools of Hillsborough County
and furthered his education at Florida A & M University, where he earned
a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Education and Masters Degree in
He was drafted into the United States Army and received an Honorable
Discharge in 1953. Mr. Johnson was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi
Fraternity Inc., Tampa Alumni Chapter and the West Coast Baptist
Association. He retired as an Assistant Principal from the School
District of Hillsborough County, Hillsborough High School after 30 years
of dedicated service.
Reverend Oscar Johnson, Jr. also retired as the Pastor of Greater Bethel
M. B. Church where he served as pastor for 35 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar Johnson, Sr. and Frances
Stanley Johnson; beloved wife, Willie P. Johnson; sisters, Helen
Jackson, Frances Johnson and June Johnson; brother, Roland H. Johnson;
sister-in-law, Mamie L. Johnson and nephew, Pastor Roland H. Oliver.
Pastor Emeritus Reverend Oscar Johnson, Jr., leaves to cherished
memories with: his children, Oscar Johnson, III (Gay), Nathan L.
Johnson, Nadine P. Johnson and Brian L. Johnson, all of Tampa, FL;
grandchildren, Dante Johnson (Nisa) of St. Petersburg, FL, Khia Thomas
(Anthony) of Tallahassee, FL, and Orhian Johnson (Kenesha) of St.
Petersburg, FL; great grandchildren, Kennedy, Malayah, Kayla, Charisse,
Arayah and Aksel; sisters-in-law, Delores White, Vaugh Grant, both of
Belle Glade, FL; brothers-in-law, Anthony Sheffield of Atlanta, GA,
Clinton Foster of Fort Lauderdale, FL and John F. Foster (Margaret) of
Rivera Beach, FL; nephews, Aaron C. Jackson (Beverly) and Daniel Troy
(Doris), all of Jacksonville, FL; and a host of other loving relatives,
church family and friends.
The remains will repose and the family will receive friends from 5 to 8
p.m. Friday, September 13th, at Greater Bethel Missionary
