Mr. Robert Raymond Colbert of Tampa passed away Sunday, July 7, 2019.  Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, July 13 at 1 p.m. at St. James House of Prayer, 2708 N. Central Avenue, Tampa FL 33602. Interment to follow at Rest Haven Memorial Park.

Mr. Robert Colbert, 86, was one of 4 children born to Hazel Colbert Wertz.  He was raised in Baltimore, Maryland and after graduating from high school, he joined the United States Air Force where he worked in the  communication division. Upon being stationed to Florida, he decided to stay and retired from the military.

He found employment with the City of Tampa where, despite his fear of heights, he installed traffic lights until his retirement in 1990.

He enjoyed learning and returned to college to get his Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Leo's University at the MacDill AFB campus.  He enjoyed an active social life and he loved to sing and was an enthusiastic bass.

He was a member of St James House of Prayer for almost 40 years. Robert enjoyed the many activities at Barksdale Senior Citizen Center and he also enjoyed local plays, watching sports and even a Lifetime movie or two in his favorite recliner.

He was a tower of strength to his family and often said: “it is what it is.”  Those who knew Robert will no doubt remember his smile, his wit, his strong opinions, his quietness, his sense of humor. May those be his lasting gifts to you.

Robert is preceded in death by: Dorothy Jean (Gunn) Colbert (wife); Dr. Yvonne E. (Cummings) Colbert (wife); Hazel Wertz (mother); Lloyd Colbert (brother); Ruth Colbert (sister); and Nancy Jean (Colbert) Baez (daughter).

Surviving family to cherish his memories are: Rhonda Colbert (daughter); Robin (Colbert) Blaylock (daughter); Rodrick Colbert (son); Frederick Blaylock (son-in-law); granddaughters, Marsheena Green, Lauren (Blaylock) Robinson (John), and Jordyn Blaylock; Henry Baez (son-in-law); Catherine Middleton (beloved cousin), James Colbert (brother); Herndon R. Cummings (Andrea), brother-in-law; Rosalind Cummings Wilson (Charles), sister-in-law; Dr. Navita Cummings James (Julius), beloved cousin-in-law; and many nieces and a nephew. As well as all the loving church members from the St. James House of Prayer.

The family will receive loved ones on Friday, July 12, 2019 from 5-8 pm at Ray Williams Funeral Home, 301 N. Howard Ave., Tampa, FL 33606.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. James House of Prayer or to your favorite charity in his name.
