Mamie Ruth Washington Ashby, 70, of Tampa, passed away suddenly
on Monday, August 27, 2018. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday,
September 22 at 2:00 p.m., at St. James A.M.E. Church, 5202 S. 86th
Street, Tampa, FL. Interment will follow in Garden of Memories
Mamie was born in Live Oak, Florida to Joe Washington and Ruth Ivey
Washington Houston. She was a 1965 graduate of Howard W. Blake High
School, and a
1969 graduate of Bethune-Cookman
University with a B.A. degree in Foreign Language and English.
Mamie was employed by the School District of Hillsborough County for
over 44 years. Her distinguished career included teaching Spanish,
English, and ESOL in middle and high schools, as well as in adult
education and night school programs.
She was an active member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church; a member of Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; Bethune-Cookman University and Howard W.
Blake High School Alumni Associations; and various civic and

brothers Thomas Hills, George Washington, Willie Washington, and Ervin
survived by: husband, Gregory Ashby; daughters, Akilah Graham-Allen
(Greg) and Jasmine Ashby Belton (Marlon); brothers, Lee Washington
(Ruby), Lonnie Houston (Shirley) and Alexander Pugh; sister, Viola
Archbold (Kenny); sisters-in-law, Sanook Washington, Eartha Hills,
Coralee Elrington, and Sandra Carney; brother-in-law, Derek Ashby;
grandchildren, Jamie Leggett, Noah Allen, Jonah Allen, Nylah Allen, and
Gregory Allen of Tampa, FL; stepchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews,
cousins and friends.
The remains will repose after 5 p.m.
Friday, September 21 and the wake will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at
Ray Williams Funeral Home, 301 N. Howard Avenue, Tampa, FL.
