Phillip Leonard Austin of Tampa passed away Sunday, October 7, 2018
at his home. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, October 13 at
2:00 p.m. at Ray Williams Memorial Chapel, 301 N. Howard Avenue, with
Bishop Sylvester Robinson, officiating. Interment will follow in Rest
Haven Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Phillip Austin was a native of Daytona Beach, FL and a resident of
Tampa for 47 years.
He was educated in the public schools of Hillsborough County where he
was a graduate of Chamberlain High School. Phillip furthered his
education at Florida A & M University where he earned his Bachelor’s
degree in Education. Phillip held several positions in the School
District of Hillsborough County as an Educator and Counselor.
Mr. Austin accepted Christ at an early age at First Baptist Church of
College Hill under the leadership of the late Reverend Henry Gordon
where he was an active member. He later moved his membership to the
First Baptist Church of Progress Village under the leadership of the
late Reverend Roosevelt Robinson, Jr. During his membership there he
was selected and ordained as a Baptist Deacon.
Phillip was active in a host of community organizations throughout the
Tampa Bay community. He served on the 1991 Super Bowl Task Force, 1992
United States Olympic committee for Barcelona, Spain; he was a very
dedicated member of the Tampa chapter FAMU Alumni Association and he has
also served with the Gourmet Gents Organization. Phillip also believed
in keeping his neighborhood clean.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his beloved son, Phillip “PJ” Austin,
Jr.; loving mother, Mary Austin; four brothers, Archie Henderson (Anna
Mouguel), Carlin Austin (Tangela), Johnny Austin, Jr. (Darlene), and
Michael Austin (Lisa) of Clearwater, FL; three sisters, Joyce Bexley
(Calvin), Lisa Dixon (Nawal) of Orlando, FL, and Helen Austin of
Springhill, FL; four uncles and four aunts all of Daytona Beach, FL;
Godson, Dwayne Sanders, Jr.; 13 nieces and nephews along with countless
other relatives and friends to include a few of his dedicated friends,
Kenneth Norman, Reverend Tony Smith, Eric Brown, Willie Sellers and
